Of all the decisions you'll make planning your wedding, your venue shapes almost everything else — your date, your guest list, your budget, even your ceremony options. Before you fall in love with a Pinterest board full of possibilities, it helps to think practically about the kind of day you actually want.
Hotel vs Marquee
Hotel weddings come with built-in convenience. The venue handles catering, tables, chairs, licensing (if they're an Approved Place — more on that below), and often accommodation for you and your guests under one roof. There's less to coordinate, less that can go wrong on the day, and a fallback plan for weather already built in. The trade-off is flexibility — you're working within an existing space, decor, and often a supplier list.
Marquee weddings give you a blank canvas. A field, a garden, a family farm — you can design the entire space from scratch, choose every supplier yourself, and create something that feels completely personal. That freedom comes with more to manage: you'll likely need to arrange your own catering, toilets, power, flooring and weatherproofing, and you'll want a backup plan if the Island's weather doesn't cooperate. Marquees also typically can't be used for the legal ceremony itself, since temporary structures aren't eligible for Approved Place status (more on that below) — many couples marry at the registry office or an approved venue earlier in the day, then celebrate at the marquee afterwards.
Indoor vs Outdoor
Indoor ceremonies and receptions are the safer bet on an island where the forecast can change within the hour. You're protected from wind and rain, acoustics are usually more forgiving for speeches and vows, and there's no need for a "Plan B." What you sometimes trade is that airy, natural light and the sense of occasion an outdoor setting brings.
Outdoor ceremonies are undeniably beautiful when they go to plan — think coastal backdrops, gardens in full bloom, natural light for photographs. But they come with real risk on the Isle of Man, where a clear morning can turn by early afternoon. If outdoor is the dream, build in a genuine covered alternative (not just a gazebo that won't survive a gust off the coast), and talk to your venue about how quickly they can pivot if needed.
A few practical questions to ask, whichever way you lean
- What's included in the price, and what will you need to source yourself?
- Is there a genuine wet-weather plan, and how much notice do they need to activate it?
- How many guests can the space realistically hold comfortably, not just on paper?
- Are there restrictions on suppliers, music curfews, or noise limits?
- If it's a marquee or outdoor site, who handles power, flooring, and toilets?
There's no single right answer here — a hotel ballroom and a marquee in a farmer's field can both make for a beautiful, memorable day. The best choice is simply the one that matches the day you're actually picturing, once you've weighed up what each option asks of you.
