So you’re engaged — congratulations! Once the excitement settles, there’s often a quieter moment where it hits you: where do we even begin? Venues, dates, guest lists, flowers, outfits… it can feel like a hundred decisions all landing at once.
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to make them all at once. Every wedding, however big or small, is built one decision at a time. We’ve put together a simple checklist to help you find your footing — and a free printable to pin to the fridge.
1. Begin together (12+ months to go)
Before you book a single thing, sit down together and talk about what really matters to you both. Is it the food? The photographs? A dance floor full until midnight? Choosing your top three priorities early makes every later decision easier.
This is also the time to agree a budget you’re both comfortable with, sketch a rough guest list, and think about a season or a few possible dates. And because the Isle of Man has its own marriage law, separate from England and Wales, check the legal steps early with the Civil Registry Office in Douglas.
2. Book the big things (9–12 months)
Your venue, registrar or celebrant, and photographer tend to book up first — especially for popular summer dates on the Island. Lock these in, and your date becomes real. If your venue doesn’t provide catering, add that to the list too. A shared planning folder or notebook now will save a lot of hunting through messages later.
3. Find your look (6–9 months)
This is where the fun really starts. Gather a colour palette and a mood — Pinterest boards, fabric scraps, a photo of a hedgerow you love. Then meet your florist and ask what will be in season for your date; seasonal, locally grown flowers look more natural and travel far less to reach you. Start the search for your outfits, order your save the dates, and book hair and make-up with a trial in the diary.
4. The finer details (3–6 months)
Music, cake, transport, rings — the details that make the day feel like yours. If you have guests travelling to the Island, encourage them to book ferries, flights and accommodation early, as space fills quickly around busy weekends.
5. The final stretch (1–3 months)
Send your invitations around eight to ten weeks before, confirm numbers, plan the seating, and enjoy your final fittings. Then write a simple timeline for the day and share it with your suppliers — and choose a go-to person (a friend, a sibling, a calm-headed aunt) so nobody needs to find you on the day itself.
A gentle thought before you start
The most meaningful weddings aren’t the ones that tick every trend — they’re the ones that feel like the two people at the centre of them. Choose suppliers whose values match your own, whether that’s seasonal flowers, reusable décor or simply people you genuinely enjoy talking to.
